A very rare and beautiful Wasmuel antique barbotine majolica plate, in a lovely Art Nouveau-influenced floral design with morning glory flowers and a butterfly. Hand made by the artisans of the Wasmuel factory in Belgian c1890-1900. A lovely piece for a collector of majolica, or barbotine wares.

Features a beautiful barbotine sculpted surface with raised flowers and leaves and a butterfly over a naturalistic spray of morning glory flowers. Also present is an intricate incised detail of stylized geometric forms which covers the entire surface of the plate not occupied by the main design.

The color is a monochrome palette of royal blue on a white ground, with subtle variations and graduations in the color to create depth. The shade and highlights within the hand applied glazes accenting the sculpted elements to beautiful effect.

Made in Belgium for the French market where a craze for majolica was sweeping the nation between 1880 and 1907. Not factory marked but of a design consistent with other pieces from the Wasmuel factory. Signed with a decorator's mark "C" and a cross.

In satisfactory antique condition with no cracks. A diamond-shaped chip of 7mm x 3mm at the top rim, a chip from the foot rim (not visible on display) and a small patch of rust coloured staining at the rim. In the center, and a few minor fleabites / glaze losses of under 1mm diameter, scratches and signs of use. Other small manufacturing flaws with inclusions under the glaze arising from the wood firing process of the time. While bearing some signs of age and use, this piece still has a lovely appearance on display. Priced according to condition.

Dimensions:
Diameter - 25cm
Height - 3.7cm

A fabulous and rare piece of antique majolica to enjoy in your home!
