Vintage Villeroy & Boch 12-24 Place Dinner Service, Phoenix Bird Floral Design, 60pc

A lovely vintage 1950s Villeroy and Boch dinner service with beautiful polychrome designs on an cream colored ground. Up to 24 place settings of dinner plates and with 12 soup plates and 12 side plates, plus an impressive set of matching serving dishes for beautiful table settings for any occasion. Made Saar basin during the time of the protectorate of France c1945-55, and bearing the rare 'Mettlach - Made in France' Economic Union Mercury mark.

This lovely ironstone dinner service features beautiful bird of paradise designs, depicting the mythical Phoenix bird along with gorgeous floral patterns and an elegant molded form for the plates. Made in earthenware with a creamy white paste with polychrome designs, richly decorated with many intricate details. An ideal vintage set in ivory white in excellent, well-kept condition and wonderful for continued use at the table.

Every piece in this set features subtle scalloped borders and / or molded edge rims in a lovely creamy white. Hand applied embellishments for the handle details and border work on the formed pieces shows the excellent workmanship to be expected from famous Mettlach factory of Villeroy and Boch.

This set has swags of cottage style charm. An absolutely classic design for a farmhouse kitchen, but its palette means it will work beautifully any vintage décor. Easy to own and use, with enough plates to serve a significant dinner party or multiple courses for smaller gatherings; accompanied by classically European matching set of serve ware. Excellent color retaining a soft ivory base without any significant discoloration and every piece is in usable condition.

PLEASE NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, all pieces are in good vintage condition, there are a few small defects itemised below. They may also show some minor crazing, light signs of use such as scratches and very minor discoloration in places.

- 24 flat plates - 26cm diameter x 3.5cm high - All plates very good condition as above, with no cracks or chips.
- 12 soup plates - 25.5cm diameter x 5cm high - All plates very good condition as above, with no cracks or chips.
12 side plates - 19.5cm diameter x 2.5cm high - All plates very good condition as above, with no cracks or chips.
- 1 x Large carving dish/platter 24 x 14cm
- 1 x large soup tureen with its lid - 20cm high (including lid - 12.5cm high without lid, excluding handles) x 22 cm diameter at rim and 27cm widest point of bowl. Width including handles is 32cm. Presents well but with damage - a repaired break to the lid handle
- 1 x deep dish salad bowl - 27.5cm x H 12.5cm small chip to the outer rim about the size of a grain of rice. A few scrapes to the foot, some crazing and staining.
- 1 x rectangular tray dish with moulded handles 34 x 17cm
- 1 x medium oval dish 34 x 22.5cm 6 cm fine hairline on the rim
- 1 x small soupiere W 27cm including handles, 22cm at widest point 18cm H with lid, 10cm without lid. Fiam 18.5cm 22cm diameter at the belly of the bowl
- 2 x low cake stands Diam 24cm H 5.5cm one has some crazing
- 1 small footed dish Diam 24.5cm H 4cm small spot of discoloration
1 x ravier 23.5cm x 14cm
1 x Round serving platters medium diam 31.5cm H 3cm
1 x Round serving platter large diam 34cm H 3cm


Damaged areas are not shown due to space val dish constraints. Unless noted in the description above, all pieces are in very good antique condition. I do have many more images available so please message me if you would like to see them.

Overall, this set remains in good condition despite its age of 70+ years. Because this is a functional item, you may expect to see signs of use including light scratches, a few small areas of glaze loss, a few small areas of discoloration, etc. Also, it is manufactured to different standards than today and you may see areas of glaze smudging, glaze spots, bubbles under the glaze which are part of the vintage charm of these items. This quality set remains very usable and will display well for years to come.
