A lovely French Antique 'talking plate' ('assiette parlante') from around 1840-1860 from the renowned faiencerie of Creil et Montereau, France. This piece has a humorous marriage theme featuring a young swain negotiating with his fiancée's father, in the central panel. A fabulous piece of antique black transferware, great on display or for use, or as a gift for an engagement or wedding!
Lovely floral and bird details in the border with an amusing family scene in the intricately rendered central panel. The text on the plate reads as follows:
No 6 - LES ACCORDS DU MARIAGE
'No. 6' shows this plate would have been part of a series of 12 pieces all depicting wedding / marriage scenes. The text translates to "The marriage agreements" and we can see the young suitor attempting to negotiate the future marriage agreements with the bride's mischievously jovial father.
Diameter: 20cm
In exceptionally good condition considering its age with no chips, cracks or significant scratches. Light signs of use and some spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time.
In truly fabulous condition for age, and ready to be put on display or given as a special gift!
