A shabby-but-charming antique French ironstone (faience) earthenware plate in blue and white transferware. Featuring a lightly aged ivory ground, with highly detailed transfer printed design of vignettes of birds. A lovely piece of very romantic antique faience ware by renowned makers Longwy, bearing some marks of its long life.

Made in a lovely petrol / teal blue transferware this is a breakfast / fruit plate size, so a little smaller and deeper dish than a normal flat dinner plate. Stamped on the base with an impressed mark an dalso stamped pattern name 'Mesange' by Longwy.

The late 1800s was an exciting time in design in Europe, and this piece unapologetically embraces the romance of the country cottage idyll that was so important in the Arts and Crafts / Aesthetic movement. This design features a spring scene with birds on blossoming branches, one is calling to the other. The gorgeous petrol blue transferware is set off beautifully by the cream-colored ground to create the inimitable look of an authentic antique.

23.2cm diameter x 3.5cm high.

Condition is shabby antique condition - still in nice condition for display, possibly occasional light use. A firing fault of a cracks to the rim and a series of scrapes and shallow chips to the outer rim above and below. Otherwise, very light crazing, and signs of use / wear commensurate with age (scratches, etc). Colour reflects the passing of time for this piece, with some consistent aging to an ivory colour, as a very light all over 'tea stain' patina. Please see photos for condition and areas of wear as the condition will not suit everyone.

This patinated beauty remains a stunning piece of romantic French antique design to display and treasure!
