Set of 6 French antique side / dessert / breakfast plates in the elegant navy blue transfer 'Flora' pattern by Creil and Montereau. Classic French antique style in densely patterned florals navy blue transferware on a crisp white ground, with a gorgeous stylised floral transfer print with morning glory and clematis flowers. In excellent condition.

This much-loved pattern dates from around 1890, made in France by renowned faience makers Creil and Montereau. The stunning floral design presents in navy blue with bold graphic elements such as the strong stripy hatching on the border, and the deepest possible blue hues for the leaves moving to the lightest washes of colour for the petals to create depth in tone-on-tone designs. Stamped with the pattern name 'Flora', and a lovely makers mark.

The design is intricate with dense coverage yet remains informal with lots of movement through the vining forms, demonstrating the early influence of the emerging style of Art Nouveau. Lovely shading in the leaves of the floral sprays which features beautifully rendered unfurling clematis and morning glory, common as a garden flower in France.

The condition is excellent antique condition throughout. No chips, cracks or significant scratches, one plate has two tiny 'fleabite' chips to the rim, otherwise light signs of use and some minor crazing, spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time. In truly fabulous condition for age, and ready to be put to use!

19.5cm diameter x 2cm high

Gorgeous wall plates or on the plate rack, these pieces would also be lovely to serve petit fours or other delicate fancies. A sweet way to add French antique style to your home!
