An elegant and rare set of French antique side/dessert plates in navy blue transferware by dating from the late 19th century (mark dated 1868-1889) from the renowned faienceries of Clairefontaine during the Sanejouand Graves period. Classic Eurpoean style in a gorgeous floral transfer print featuring a dense Dutch-inspired pattern of stylised floral sprays and geometric elements, along with a distinctive teardrop pattern on the border design. A lovely and rare find to embellish your table!
Priced and sold as a SET of 6 plates.
Made in a deep navy blue transferware, on a white paste. The design is an intricate non-repeating pattern based on hand painted Dutch designs from the famous Delft potteries. Beautifully detailed and shaded in a 'camaieu bleu' wash effect.
The condition is 'good' to 'excellent' antique condition throughout. 3 examples each with a shallow glaze loss to the outer rims (please see photos). Remaining examples show no chips. Throughout the set, no cracks or significant scratches, light signs of use and some minor crazing, spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time. Despite the small areas of damage, the plats remain in good condition for age, these plates remain ready to be put to use.
Dimensions 22cm x 2cm high. Large side plate size, probably intended for desserts, salads, or as a breakfast plate; it would be lovely to serve entrees, petit fours or other delicate fancies.
