A set of 5 beautiful antique French dinner plates, in the famous design 'Marie-Louise' marked for St Amand with a mark dating from 1896-1924. A classic design featuring a richly detailed and coloured floral design of clematis flowers in red against a delicately aged white ground. From the period of the Arts and Crafts / Aesthetic Movement.
Priced and sold as a SET of 5 pieces.
The factory of Hamage St Amand specialized in fine earthenware and majolica and were known for their excellent quality of transferware decoration. These beautiful plates are made in earthenware with a white paste and teal blue transferware. A perfect French country design, this pattern was very popular at the time and typical of the period where cottage and country idylls were the thing to have on tasteful French tables.
Vining flowers, probably a variety of clematis flower, form a striking naturalistic pattern around the border, with tiny tendrils advancing into the center of the plates. To the Victorians, clematis was a symbol of wisdom, tenacity and ingenuity, as the tendrils of the vine find their way through and around obstacles to achieve their objectives.
23cm diameter 2.5cm high
Condition - 4 plates in very good antique condition, 1 piece with a shallow chip to the outer rim of approx. 6mm diameter, 2 pieces with overglazed manufacturing faults to the rims. All pieces may have scratches, small fleabite chips and/or discoloration to the rim, some small scratches/scuffs on the serving surface of each of the plates. Please see photos for details.
