A set of 3 very elegant but shabby French antique side plates in a soft grey blue transferware from Sarreguemines. Classic French vintage style in a gorgeous floral transfer print, with stylised floral sprays, a lovely example of French transferware of the Art Nouveau period. Made in high quality earthenware c1910-1920 by renowned the faiencerie of U&C (Utzschnieder & Co) Sarreguemines, France

These lovely plates are classic pieces of French design, perfect French Country style. A stunning floral design in a soft grey blue. Impressed with production numbers on the base, along with the stamped pattern name 'Royat' as part of the maker's mark.
The design is intricate yet remains open and airy, with only a light border pattern and the naturalistic vining pattern of the flowers. The pattern is primarily a rendering of Columbine flowers, which to the Victorians were symbolic of romantic love, due to the revival of classical associations with Aphrodite, as well as being symbols of piety and the suffering of the Virgin Mary (from the Renaissance period). The design features lovely shading in the leaves of the flower petals, and slightly stylised stalks and leaves, typical of the sinuous forms of the Art Nouveau period.
The plates are all in shabby antique condition - the colour is mostly bright and clear but a little 'tea-stained' patina, each of the three plates has small chips to the face of the rim or less than 1cm. In addition, one plate has a penetrating hairline crack from the rim towards the centre with some movement in the crack. The plates would be not be suitable for use but still display beautifully. Each plate is 20.5cm diameter x 2cm high.
