A fabulous SET of 10 antique ironstone red transferware formal soup plates in a large size from the late Victorian era. These generously proportioned square plates with rounded corners were made by 'Société Céramique' Maestricht c1900-1910 in the 'Victoria' pattern which features a red floral scalloped rim on a cream background.
Price is for the SET of 10 plates.
The 'Victoria' pattern dates to around 1900-1920 and features gorgeous floral borders of acanthus leaves and blooms with garden urns filled with flowers alongside birds of paradise, floral sprays and distant silhouetted village skylines. The images are very richly detailed and presented in a colour palate ranging from deep Bordeaux red to dusky pink which gives a striking tonal depth to the compositions.
The plates are a lovely examples of Maastrict faience. In 1851 Winand Nicolaas Clermont and Charles Chainaye founded a pottery in the Maastricht neighbourhood Wijck. Their company was taken over in 1859 by the Belgian engineer Guillaume Lambert and 1863 renamed to Société Céramique. The company became a principal competitor of Petrus Regout (Sphinx), both producing mainly earthenware.
These lovely plates evoke classic vintage cottage style featuring a sweet formal border design with floral sprays and a gently sculpted and scalloped edge, in a classic palette of red and white. Generously proportioned for modern uses such as salad and pasta dishes as well as soups, this set is ready to keep serving.
In good antique condition overall. There are small chips to the rim on 3 plates and one has a hairline crack, please see photos for details. Generally, a lovely cream white colour, with very little discoloration and a few small areas of scrapes and light scratches associated with their use over the last 100 years. Overall plates are in good condition for display or use.
