A rare matching set of 8 French vintage entree / starter or small dinner plates, stencil painted in an early Art Deco style, in a bold geometric pattern. Perfect for vintage, farmhouse or cottage décor, in a gorgeous Bordeaux red and white colorway with an iconic octagonal sunburst border design. In excellent condition, this set bears a back stamp dating from c1900-1905, and the pattern name 'Louise' by Theodore Fenal ('TF') of Badonviller.

This authentic antique set of plates is made in 'terre de fer' French ironstone faience and features a geometric border pattern in a deep wine red which gives the impression of the plate being octagonal. Lovely creamy white ground to offset the crimson red, the patterns showing the slight variations in colour that accompany the stencil process.
Base stamp from iconic French ceramics factory T. Fenal of Badonviller whose faiencerie specialized in this stencil painted technique and who used the method to create innovative, forward-looking designs that formed part of the trend towards the Art Deco movement (which is usually defined as starting after the Parisian exhibition of 1924). With the back stamp marking these as pre 1905, the Fenal factory can be seen to be well ahead of their time with this minimalist design.
Plate dimensions - 22cm diameter x 3cm high
In excellent vintage condition these plates show few signs of the passage of 120 years. There is no damage to note, no chips or cracks. Some very light scratches, signs of use, and one plate with a few 'flea bite' glaze losses from the underside of the rim. Still great for use / display and in ideal condition to give as a special gift.
