Fabulous French style with this rare set of 5 French antique 'talking plates' ('assiettes parlantes' in French) c 1884 with the theme of a French fashions through the ages. With 5 different designs in transferware on ironstone faience in the series illustrating changing fashions through the reigns of different French monarchs.
In very good condition, these antique plates are wonderfully detailed and rendered in intricate designs with a molded arcaded / pierced border, with a basket weave texture to accompany the perforated edge. Black transferware for the central scenes, rendered in beautiful detail.
Priced and sold as a SET of 5 pieces - different designs from the same series.
The central panels of each plate each feature a different scene, with the captions in the original French as follows (please note, 'sous' means 'under' and the numbers ('768', etc) represent the year to date the fashion shown):
Plate 1 - Sous Charlemaine (768)
Plate 2 - Sous Louis IX (1226)
Plate 3 - Sous Louis XV (1713)
Plate 4 - Sous Louis XVI (1774)
Plate 5 - Sous La Republique (1792)

Diameter: 19cm
Height: 1.5cm
The set overall is in good condition, 3 plates in superb condition for their age, with no chips and very few signs of use, likely they have been kept for display. Two plates have a shallow glaze loss / chip to their rim, please see photo. The basket edges make these gorgeous but fragile, so we recommend these for display, and perhaps only very occasional / light use.
