A shabby-but-lovely set of 3 beautiful antique French side plates, in the pattern ''Carmen'' by Sarreguemines. Ironstone / earthenware with a lovely, richly detailed, blue and white transferware design featuring naturalistic butterflies in an autumn / fall scene. Produced during the Arts and Crafts / Aesthetic Movement, dating from c1890-1905.
Priced and sold as SET of 3 plates. each with a unique transferware design.
The late 1800s was an exciting time in design in Europe, and this design unapologetically embraces the romance of the country cottage idyll that was so important in the Arts and Crafts / Aesthetic movement. This divergent design is different on each plate, all feature summer vignettes with butterflies fluttering around wildflowers. The gorgeous blue transferware is set off beautifully by the cream-colored ground to create the inimitable look of an authentic antique.
20cm diameter x 1.5cm high.
The plates are in lightly shabby antique condition and each show signs of their age - one has penetrating hairline crack to its rim and a 5 chips to the underside of the rim, one of which is just visible from the surface.
The second plate has some spots of discoloration and 'fleabite' chips to the underside of its rim.
the third plate has one shallow rim chip which looks to have been sustained during production.
