A lovely vibrant rustic-style French vintage plate, with a folk-art bird motif. This wood-fired earthenware display plate, glazed in brown, green, blue and yellow, is proper French country design, featuring a charming hand-painted brown and green design of a bird amongst foliage, typical of the south of France.
This piece is unsigned and undated. Hand painted with a time-worn glaze on a pinkish terracotta biscuit. The plate shows extensive crazing, glaze smudges and light signs of age including some small mature chips under the rim (see photo).
22cm / 8.5" diameter
This piece was found in the Correze region of France, and likely came from one of the countless regional potteries that served this area before the advent of widespread distribution of factory-made pottery. Likely origin is Martres-Tolosane or the Nevers potteries.
