A beautiful French vintage religious icon with a lovely image of the Madonna with baby Jesus and John the Baptist from a painting by Botticelli. This extremely decorative object of veneration focuses on the Christian theme of Virgin Mary & Christ child, in a lovely (and deeply symbolic) frame of gold with sweet embellishments to surround the printed image of the famous Botticelli painting 'Madonna of the Book' c. 1480 (currently in the collection of the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan, Italy). Presented in a round Florentine frame.
Purchased in France from a 'vide grenier' (empty attic) sale, this piece was probably made in the early-mid 20th century by Italian artisans for the French market. It would have been a focal point for prayer and religious contemplation in the home. A lovely devotional object which can be hung on the wall or placed on a shelf, as desired.
In gently aged condition, with a small area of damage with a crack through the lower left quadrant of the frame and some worn patches / scratches where the white gesso now shows through the gold paint work. The paper backing is torn. Apart from these knocks and scrapes, the gold paint remains well attached with no flaking, or serious craquelure.
