Pair of French antique black transferware 'talking plates' c1880 by Jules Vieillard, Bordeaux, France

A charming pair of French Antique "talking plates" from around 1880 from the famous faienceries of Jules Vieillard of Bordeaux. With a fine basketweave and floral barbotine rim motif and superb black centerpiece transferware drawings depicting scenes of domestic life of the time with a humorous caption.

Assiettes parlantes, or talking plates, were common in the late 19th century and often had playful, political, philosophic or religious themes which would amuse dinner guests and inspire conversation around the dinner table.

Mother with children, 'Pouvoir constituant' (constituent power) - here was no doubt a playful suggestion that constituent power is something fundamental, generational and familial rather than parliamentary or abstract.

Couple with lady holding stocking, 'Politique conservatrice' - this plate seems to allude to a minor domestic drama with an exaggeratedly moral tone, perhaps making fun of the 'conservative' social roles and propriety.

These pieces make a great humorous gift or interesting display feature. In good antique condition with some signs of wear, minor discoloration or surface and rim wear: one of the plates has a faint 2" (4,5cm) hairline across the rim, please see photos. They are still sound and remain lovely on display with the patina of age.
