A French antique barbotine majolica plate, in a lovely design with birds on cherry branches. Hand made in France c1900. A charming pair of plates, showing the variations common between pieces, ideal for a collector of majolica, or for lovers of French faience. Features a beautiful barbotine sculpted surface with raised fruits and leaves and charming songbirds in a hand painted colorway. Also, a lovely scalloped border with a repeating scroll spiral pattern that edges each piece. The colors are in a pastel palette of delicate duck egg green, along with pink, grey, green and brown. Subtle variations and graduations in the color create depth, with the shade and highlights within the polychrome hand painted glazes accenting the sculpted elements to beautiful effect. CONDITION - One piece in very good antique condition with no large chips or cracks. A small scrape to the outer rim, some crazing and a few small 'flea bites' here and there. The second piece is good condition, as above, but with the presence of a small firing fault of a 1cm fissure at the outer rim, along with some discolouration of the glaze on the base of the plate. A few additional fleabites / glaze losses of under 1mm diameter, light signs of use. Overall light signs of wear and use, with no major issues to to detract from appearance on display.
