A gorgeous French antique blue ironstone transferware cake stand / compotier in the pattern 'Sofia' by renowned faience makers Gien, France c1890. Navy blue glaze with crisp white ground, featuring a lovely checker patterned border design accompanied by trefoil sprigs of foliage.
The beautiful cottage style pattern around the border lends a maritime / coastal feel to this piece, further enhanced by the crisp navy blue and white colorway. Exquisitely detailed transfer printing and quality form to enjoy.
In good antique condition, with a few marks of time but presents well on display. Two small shallow glaze scrapes under the rim, one of the size of an apple seed and the other smaller, neither visible from the front face. No cracks. Colour is an attractive crisp white ground, some light signs of age and use and wear, primarily minor scratches and overall light crazing, no patchy discoloration. A lovely piece on display and remains suitable for use - perfect for cakes, candies, cupcakes, etc - or as a centerpiece with a fruit / floral display.
