A delightful large shabby French antique enamel salt box in white enamel with blue and black line decoration and the word 'Sel' in a fabulous gothic script- classic vintage farmhouse style!
Made for the French market, this is an absolutely stunning example of a salt canister, with many extra embellishments to elevate its classic blue and white colorway. Sculpted panels, hand painted elements and a fancy calligraphic script make this a little grander than most other examples, while its large size makes this the perfect statement piece for a French vintage, farmhouse, shabby chic or cottage style kitchen.
25.7cm high including lid / inserts (22cm high without lid)
13.5cm diameter (at base of pot)
Condition is sadly VERY shabby - the exterior presents as lightly distressed but, as is quite common with salt boxes, the interior is extremely rusted. The rim of the base at the back is entirely absent leaving a 1cm approx gap along the back edge inside the box, and a few holes around the other bottom edges. The base is still solidly attached. You would have to use this with a liner container to store your salt. Otherwise, the exterior is in satisfactory vintage condition with some loss of enamel, scratches, marks here and there, signs of use and a long life in a working kitchen. No dents or major damage (apart from the rusted base), all parts still well attached, lid hinges still work well - ready to go on display or to use with a liner.
Despite its many problems this remains an extremely decorative and unusual object - a lovely piece of French enamelware to take pride of place on your kitchen wall, shelves or bench!
