A fabulous set of 6 graduated / stacking French vintage enamel twisted rib fluted canisters c1920 in lovely soft earth tones, airbrushed brown over white. Made in descending size these pieces look gorgeous together on a shelf with beautiful French labels, stencil painted to complement the airbrushed glazes.
Made for the French market with all labels in French, stamped for the famous enamel makers of BB Torseine, this set features a beautiful diagonal rib pattern on the canister and a stepped form on the lids, all 3-D effects that add texture and interest to the surface. This gorgeous formwork is set off beautifully by the soft cinnamon brown base color which has been airbrushed on to graduate softly to white at the top of the canister. Graduated size means the set stacks one inside the other for efficient storage.
This set is in good vintage condition with no holes or serious rust and would be a superb French vintage addition to an Art Deco, farmhouse, shabby chic or cottage style kitchen. Love the softness of the palette and the utilitarian stencil font!
In descending size as follows from largest to smallest:
"Sucre" - 18cm high x 13.3cm diameter
"Cafe" - 17.5cm high x 12.3cm diameter
"Farine" - 17cm high x 11.3cm diameter
"Pates" - 16.5cm high x 10.3cm diameter
"Thé" - 14.5cm high x 9.3cm diameter
"Epices" - 12.5cm high x 8.3cm diameter
(All sizes best estimate +/-3mm, taken at widest / tallest point, including lids)
This set is good vintage condition and can continue to be used for food storage if desired. The "Epices" pot has lost a large area of enamel coating through some kind of accident (see photo); and the Pates pot has a glaze loss and rust marks inside the pot; a minor deformation / depression of the base of the cafe pot means the base is not completely flat - this is minor and does not change its appearance or affect its usability. Other than that, the base pots are in good condition with some smaller chips of the paint but without major problems. For the lids there is more chipping to see, and significant areas of enamel loss to the outside (the interior of the lids remain in very good condition). Overall you will see chips, scratches, marks here and there, general signs of use and wear on each piece, including areas of discoloration inside the pots and scrapes / signs of use at the edges. This is to be expected with the age of the set so "good" in this context is relative to other enamel wares of this age. No other damage or repairs. In fully usable condition and excellent on display.
Overall a lovely set in classic enamel, with all bases intact and all lids present which remains very usable - a great vintage find!
