A lovely classic white 19th C French soupiere / soup tureen from Creil et Montereau France. Antique French faience of the highest quality, with sculpted handles, glazed in white with no other decoration, ideal for a monochromatic or white on white decor scheme.
This small-to-medium tureen, with its original lid, was made in French ironstone (earthenware) by the famous faiencerie of Creil et Montereau in the mid-to-late 19th century. In good condition with a subtle patina of age and use, this is a classic French country piece which remains suitable for service, despite its long life.
Elegant curving form with stunning intricate loop handles and acanthus leaf designs make this is a perfect French country décor piece. Showing only a few signs of the passage of its long life of more than 120 years, this fabulous piece would be beautiful as a centerpiece, fruit bowl, flower vessel, candy dish, or for serving.
The soupiere is in good antique condition - no cracks and no large chips to the bowl, but with a medium chip from one side of the outer rim of the lid. Otherwise a few small glaze losses at the rim of the bowl and under the lid, a little discoloration at the rim of the bowl. Glaze is generally in good condition and could be used for food service if desired. This piece would make an excellent fruit bowl, or a bowl for nuts in shells, or for bread rolls, cakes, etc. It would also be fabulous with a floral display.
Please check all the photos and feel free to ask any questions :)
Stamped on the base for Creil et Montereau, with a rare 'B et Cie' mark in use between 1876-1884 by this famous faience / earthenware maker, during the directorship of Anatole Barluet.
Dimensions:
26cm high including lid, to top of handle (15cm high without lid)
23cm diameter at widest point, 20cm at bowl rim.
27cm wide including handles
(All measurements are approximate to +/- 1cm)
An authentic, historic and completely charming piece of French antique ceramic ware to display and enjoy.
Feel free to ask any questions! :)
