Stunning antique French ironstone (faience) transferware soup plate from the height of the Aesthetic Movement c1890. Exhibiting influences of Japonisme, with a high-contrast transfer printed design in navy blue with floral sprays of marguerite flowers, also known as the Paris daisy, for a romantic and timeless piece of antique faience ware.

Price is for ONE plate. 3 pieces available at the time of listing - identical designs with variable condition.

Manufactured for the Grand Dépôt, an upscale boutique founded in 1862 by Emile Bourgeois (1832-1926) on the rue Drouot in Paris, the plates were probably made by one of the English Staffordshire potteries for the French market. This design 'Marguerite' features in the Grand Depot catalogue of 1890.

The late 1800s was an exciting time in design in Europe, and we can see an interesting transitional design in this piece, with romantic natural forms of the marguerite flowers interspersed with patterned roundels, reminiscent of Japanese ceramic patterns and also Celtic and Breton forms that were being revived in the Arts and Crafts (Secession in France) movement of the late 19th century. These seemingly disparate influences are not unrelated, as the Aesthetic / Secession / Arts and Crafts movements drew heavily from the philosophies of Japanese artisans, especially in the rejection of fussy design for its own sake and instead embracing the beauty of functional objects.

The back stamp reads:

The condition is excellent antique condition throughout. No chips, cracks or significant scratches, light signs of use and some minor crazing, spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time. Slight tea-stained patina which adds to their charm and beauty. In truly fabulous condition for age, and ready to be put to use!
