A lovely French Antique Rebus riddle plate from around 1884-1900 by renowned faiencerie Creil and Montereau. This 'assiette parlante' c1890, carries an anti-war slogan on a military theme with a pictogram word riddle in the black transferware central panel.
Loveloy colorway in cornflower blue border with a black central panel, and rebus riddle to solve - read the pictorial clues (in French) to solve the text which is found on the reverse as follows:
"No 12 - Les Puissances armées sont une ruine universelle"
(This translates roughly to "The Armed Powers are a universal ruin" - Number 12 shows this plate would have been part of a series of 12 pieces, this being the final instalment)
Diameter: 19cm
A superb piece, very interesting historically for its pacifist message, with an anti-war message still relevant to political discourse today.
