Lovely antique water pitcher / French 'broc' by French faience producers Grigny (Rhone) France. Beautiful decoration in lavender and white transferware with a romantic countryside scene. Unfortunately, this piece has a visible chip to the foot rim, but it remains watertight and would still serve as an excellent vase, centerpiece or decorative embellishment for your home.
This ornamental piece dates to the late 1800s and still presents well, with its crisp white ground and lovely mauve transferware decoration. The design is from the height of the Victorian era and features a formal border pattern and an idealized countryside scene, finished with a wonderful serpent handle.
In satisfactory condition for age, with a large mature chip on the foot rim. No cracks to the body of the jug so still watertight, slight discoloration inside and a few flea bite glaze losses from the outer surface.
Dimensions: 13cm diameter at widest point of the belly of the jug 19cm high (at highest point) 17cm maximum depth (from back of handle to front of jug) (All dimensions are approximate)
