A beautifully detailed and rare antique French ironstone (faience) transferware dinner plate, c1890-1905 from Sarreguemines. Featuring a delicately aged cream ground, with highly detailed transfer printed design of vignettes of birds in a lovely grey-green palette. A lovely piece of very romantic (and quintessentially French) antique faience ware.
This design 'Neige' (French for 'snow'), was made by U&C (Utzschneider et Cie) of Sarreguemines in the late 19th century.
The design features a snowy scene with birds on winter branches and in flight in a dense border design that also extends into the plate dish. A very sweet scene with lovely detail to explore and a pleasing balance to the overall design. With its sweet birds huddling together for warmth, this piece unapologetically embraces the romance of the country cottage idyll that was so important in the Arts and Crafts / Aesthetic movement. A delightful design to enjoy on display or in use.
22.75cm diameter x 3cm high.
Condition is excellent antique condition - a lovely piece for display or use. Very light crazing, and signs of use / wear commensurate with age (moderate scrapes, scratches, etc). Colour is a gently aged ivory. See photos for condition. There are no chips or cracks whatsoever.
