A stunning and rare antique French ironstone (faience) brown transferware plate c1880-1890. Featuring a lovely transfer printed design in brown with stylised vignettes of floral sprays, feathers and the silhouette of a bird for a timeless piece of antique faience ware.

Manufactured for the Grand Dépôt, an upscale boutique founded in 1862 by Emile Bourgeois (1832-1926) on the rue Drouot in Paris, the plate was probably made by one of the English Staffordshire potteries for the French market. This example is unsigned by the maker (though stamped with impressed production numbers on the base) showing that it was made specifically for the supply of the Grand Depot in Paris.

The late 1800s was an exciting time in design in Europe, and we can see an interesting transitional design in this piece, with romantic natural forms of the blossom flowers entwined with a bamboo trellis, reminiscent of Japanese ceramic patterns. In teh background a very interesting interior scene of a sideboard with various objets, and fabulous Victorian-style wallpaper! Within this scene we can see Celtic and Breton forms that were being revived in the Arts and Crafts ('Secession' in France) movement of the late 19th century. These seemingly disparate influences are not unrelated, as the Aesthetic / Secession / Arts and Crafts movements drew heavily from the philosophies of Japanese artisans, and historic Celtic arts, rejecting fussy design for its own sake and instead embracing the beauty of functional objects.

The back stamp reads:
"Grand Dépot de Porcelaines et Faiences
21 rue Drouot Paris
Succursale
33 rue St Ferreol Marseille"

Dimensions: 23.6cm diameter x 3cm high

Condition - In excellent antique condition, appears to have been kept for display. No chips or cracks. No scrapes or deep scratches. As to be expected at an age of over 100 years, this piece has some very light signs of age and use including a few very light scratches, very tiny areas of glaze loss and crazing. As with all antique faience wares, you may notice minor manufacturing faults including a glaze smears, transfer skips and small inclusions under the glaze, as to be expected with the looser manufacturing standards of the time. Please see photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions. Displays very well and in good usable condition.

A lovely and unusual piece of French antique design in exceptional condition to enjoy!
