Stunning romantic French antique water pitcher from the late 19th century. Absolutely exquisite decoration in green transferware on an ivory white base with subtle accents of barbotine majolica on the handle. This late Victorian pattern is from the height of the Aesthetic Movement, embracing the country cottage idyll so important at this time - perfect country-style design, ideal for a French Country or vintage interior.

This piece dates to the 1880-1900s and presents with a lovely ivory white ground and deep green decoration. The transferware printing is very detailed with the lovely shading of the foliage and birds - a beautiful example of the art of ironstone transferware with so much detail to enjoy in this piece.

The pattern features wild rose, fuchsia, daisy and other florals, and has as its stars a bird and a butterfly, whose naturalistic forms are beautifully observed down to the smallest details in their wings. The treatment of light and shade is exceptional, all the depth creating by rendering different densities of the same tone of teal green. This is a real treat to see in person!

The jug features an applied barbotine majolica handle with subtle acanthus leaf detail at the base and top, a lovely complement to this intricate piece.

Originally this water jug was used for washing, but now the jug can work as a stunning vase or table centerpiece, or ideal as a décor piece for a romantic and relaxing bathroom scheme, or for wedding photos or table decoration.
