A rare French antique religious 'talking plate' ('assiette parlante' in French) c1886-1900 with the theme of the martyrdom of Joan of Arc, the patron Saint of France (and feminist icon!). Originally form as series of 12 pieces, this piece is the final depicting her death by burning and martyrdom. Number 12 in the series 'Histoire de Jeanne D'Arc' by Faiencerie de Gien, France.
In fabulous condition, this antique plate is wonderfully detailed and rendered in intricate designs of red and black transferware. Very detailed with exquisite Victorian / Neoclassical design elements including a border frieze of cartouches on martial themes.
The central panels of the plate bears the caption:
Mort de Jeanne d'Arc, brûlée vive à Rouen en 1431 (translated from the French as follows: "12 - Death of Joan of Arc, burned alive in Rouen in 1431")
Dimensions: Diameter: 20.4cm, Height: 2.5cm
In exceptionally good condition with no chips and very few signs of use, likely it has been kept for display. A few small scratches and tiny scrapes or fleabites from the rims, no discoloration or major crazing. Truly rare to find at an age of over 120 years in such good condition.
