A series of 3 rare French antique talking plates showing countryside pastimes with a grape harvest theme. Made in the era of the Bourbon Restoration around c1820-1825 in fine faience in black transferware designs, these plates each feature a different countryside scene with a grape leaf and fruit border.
Marked for Creil (who later joined with a competitor to become the renowned faiencerie Creil et Montereau) with a mark that notes the company's first win of a silver medal in 1819 at the famous Paris exhibitions, but with no mention of the later gold medals, which allows us to accurately date these pieces between 1820 - 1825.
In a pared back colorway of black on white ground, this piece is made in fine faience, also known as demi-porcelaine, a high-fired fine grade earthenware / ironstone.
These pieces were part of a series of plates each featuring scenes from the countryside of France. Variations are as follows:
Plate 1 - Soldiers et al playing boules (or pétanque) a French bowling game. Incorporates the number 11 into the design, which would indicate this plate's order in the series.
Plate 2 - A musical interlude with country folk watching a harpist perform. Numbered 5.
Plate 3 - An ambiguous scene, possibly of a drunken brawl ! The number is indistinct, but it might be 1.
The shipping price per plate will reduce significantly for purchases or 2 or 3 pieces together, so if you purchase more than 1 plate, I will refund the shipping overages. Alternatively you can enquire with your postcode before buying and I will calculate the exact shipping price for your location.
All pieces are In good antique condition with no chips or cracks. Some deep scratches and signs of use, a little sepia staining around the inner rim especially. Still display very well and nice examples of fine French earthenware of the Regence era.
Interesting historical pieces with a pared back beauty, providing fascinating insights into the French way of life during the 19th century.
Diameter: 22.5cm
Fabulous pieces for china collectors, history enthusiasts and lovers of all things French!
