Beautiful and rare antique French dinner plate Gien, c 1860-71 A lovely hunting-inspired design from the height of the Victorian period, this piece features 'sangliers' (wild boar) and hunters on foot and on horseback with dogs in exquisitely detailed tone-on-tone blue transferware on a crisp white base.
A beautiful, charming and very rare piece of antique French ironstone (faience), delicately aged but still crisp. A lovely white ground allows the highly detailed transfer printed design to shine on this fabulous example of mid 19th century French faience.
The transferware work is exquisite, displaying a technical mastery that attests to the skills of the artisans of the period at the faiencerie de Gien, a renowned ceramics house which won the Médaille d'or and other honors at the 19th century Paris exhibitions.
24.8cm diameter x 2.5cm high.
Condition is good antique condition - a lovely piece for display or use. One scrape to the underside of the rim, no cracks, some signs of use / wear commensurate with age (light scratches, etc). A small glaze loss on the face of the piece, probably a bubble pit present since the time of manufacture. Please see photos for details, and feel free to ask any questions.
