An elegant French antique sauce boat ('sauciere') in grey blue whiplash pattern of vines and peas in pods. Classic French vintage style from the Belle Epoque with stylised floral sprays and sinuous Art Nouveau forms. This is a lovely example of French design of the Art Nouveau period, made in high quality earthenware c1900-1910 by renowned the faiencerie of U&C (Utzschnieder & Co) Sarreguemines, France
This lovely piece is classic piece of French design, perfect French Country style. A stunning raised barbotine design colored in a soft grey blue. Double ended pouring spout with attached footplate, Impressed with production numbers on the base, along with the stamped pattern name 'Pois' ('Peas') as part of the maker's mark.
The design is intricate yet remains open and airy, with only a sinuous pattern which evokes the naturalistic vining of the pea plant. Stylized stalks and leaves, typical of the forms of the Art Nouveau period.
The sauciere is in very good antique condition - no large chips or cracks, nice consistent ivory color, some signs of use, a few small flea bite glaze losses here and there including a small glaze scrape to the outer rim of the footplate, 2-3mm in diameter. Some manufacturing irregularities including color variations, spots under the glaze as to be expected for manufacturing processes of the time. Lovely creamy ivory color, a few areas of darker tea stain discoloration inside the bowl. Light overall crazing to be expected for age of 120 years - in great condition for display or use.
Dimensions:
26cm long x 16cm wide including foot plate
11.5cm high
