A stunning and very rare French antique Architecture plate showing the Colonnade du Louvre c1820 in black transferware, with an oak leaf border. Unmarked but atttributed to Creil (who later joined with a competitor to become the renowned faiencerie Creil et Montereau).
In near-perfect antique condition with no chips or cracks, this is a true collector's piece.
In a pared back colorway of black on white ground, this piece is made in fine faience, also known as demi-porcelaine, a high-fired fine grade earthenware / ironstone.
Text as follows:
"COLONNADE DU LOUVRE
A PARIS"
This piece was part of a famous series of plates each featuring the architecture of France.
ABOUT THE LOUVRE COLONNADE: "The Louvre Colonnade is the easternmost façade of the Palais du Louvre in Paris. It has been celebrated as the foremost masterpiece of French Architectural Classicism since its construction, mostly between 1667 and 1674. The design, dominated by two loggias with trabeated colonnades of coupled giant columns, was created by a committee of three, the Petit Conseil, consisting of Louis Le Vau, Charles Le Brun, and Claude Perrault. Louis Le Vau's brother, François Le Vau also contributed. Cast in a restrained classicizing baroque manner, it interprets rules laid down by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, whose works Perrault translated into French (1673). Its flat-roofline design, previously associated with Italy and unprecedented in France, was immensely influential." (Wikipedia)
Dating from the Bourbon Restoration, this piece is exactly in line with the fashion of the time for celebrating the past grandeur of France and, though those means, celebrating the achievements of the Royal families past. The choice of a border in oak leaves reinforces the symbolism of the Restauration with the oak a symbol of power and strength, as well as stability - the main values that the monarchy wished to promote at the time.
An interesting historical piece with a pared back beauty, celebrating one of the architectural marvels of the world.
Diameter: 22.5cm
In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. Consistent crisp colour, no crazing. A very small glaze loss of 1mm x 3mm on the right hand rim. Scratches, signs of use in a light patina of wear. In phenomenal condition for its age of around 200 years.
A magnificent piece for china collectors, architecture enthusiasts and lovers of all things French.
Please feel free to ask any questions :)
