A romantic and rare unsigned French antique scalloped edge dinner plate in navy blue transferware on a powder blue background, probably dating from 1880-90 during the Aesthetic / Arts and Crafts movements. Unmarked except for production numbers (I-11 and 2), this piece is a rare design, which bears many similarities to the work of the famed ceramic designer Pierre Mallet.

This exuberant and intricate transferware design features a very sweet French country vignette depicting a lovely dragonfly surrounded by non-repeating floral tableaux. Lovely shading a depth in the flowers, all in monochrome navy blue on a powder blue ground.

No maker's mark is present but an impressed number on the base. I have not been able to identify this design and the model is quite rare - however it bears many similarities to the work of Pierre Mallet whose famed 'Ornithology' series for Wedgewood remains in high demand for collectors, and the form of the plate being Octagonal with small, scalloped cut outs at the corners is a form used by the Staffordshire potteries for his work. Possibly the stamp was omitted at the time of production (not an uncommon occurrence in the factories of the time).

CONDITION - In very good antique condition with no chips or cracks. Light signs of use and wear such as light scrapes and scratches are present. Still usable and displays very well.

23.5cm diameter x 2.5cm high

A lovely way to add apiece of authentic French country charm to your home!
