A delightful blue and white round Delftware butter dish, with a charming Japanese / Chinese inspired design in the famous 'Long Eliza' pattern (also known as 'Long Elisa' or by the Dutch "Lange Lijzen") featuring cherry blossoms and figures in oriental garden scenes, and a bold geometric border. In the form of a French-style butter keeper with a raised edge inner bowl for the butter, inserted under the lid for maximum freshness without refrigeration.

This beautiful and timeless blue and white piece was made by Dutch artisans in the late 19th century and is in the style known as 'Long Elisa' which incorporates elements of Chinoiserie and Japonisme in its design.

The charming design makes this dish ideal for display, or to repurpose as a charming cache / trinket box, or for anything you want to stash. A dense and intricate design with a strong structure and charming painted panels. Traceries of stylized flowers and foliage, with cherry blossom and chrysanthemum designs. Delicately painted geometric border motif forms a striking embellishment to finish this lovely piece.

In gently aged condition with a few small areas of damage and discoloration including a hairline in the base of the butter bowl, in the outer rim of the base plate, and a hairline crack to the rim of the lid. These areas are not very visible when the piece is assembled as the pattern covers anything that can be seen from the outside, but they are visible inside the piece. There is also a major firing fault with the glaze under the plate - also very difficult to see on display, but will be noticed when handling the piece. This has caused bubbling of the surface and a large yellow-coloured area of discoloration under the plate -the piece still displays well, and the surface is intact, but please see photos as the condition will not suit everyone.

This example unmarked. Purchased in France at a 'vide maison' (empty house) sale.

Diameter: 17 cm
Height: 9 cm (including lid)

A timeless vintage piece to use and enjoy for years to come!
