A very cute French Antique "talking plate" from around 1880 from the famous faienceries of Jules Vieillard of Bordeaux. A superb little cartoon plate showing a dapper chap on an old-style bicycle (or 'Velocipede' as they are known in French), formally dressed with mustache oiled, ready for undertaking a holiday journey along bumpy French roads.

Lovely condition in a black and white colorway with a floral and foliate transferware border, with black central illustrated panel, and text as follows:
"La Saison des Vacances"
"Les velocipedes - Voitures de l'avenir"
(This translates roughly to "Velocipedes - Carriages of the Future" - while probably quite serious at the time, it obviously reads humorously today!)

Height: 2.2cm
This is a great piece, fabulous for a bicycle or cycling enthusiast, a history nut, or as a humorous gift. In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks, no deep scratches or discoloration. Exceptionally well preserved, has likely been kept for display and remains fully intact.
