Beautiful French antique side plates by Creil et Montereau, c 1875-1890. In the sought-after pattern 'Japon', created for the artist Monet at his house in Giverny (in fact, the pattern is often called 'Monet'), this is a lovely Japanese-inspired design from the height of the Aesthetic Movement, featuring a mix of iconography including a cherry blossoms, rondels, blossoming branches and vases in a hybrid of popular patterns of the time. Lovely Japanese floral arrangements in an exquisitely detailed tone-on-tone blue transferware on a distinctive grey-white base.

Priced and sold individually. Two available in different condition.

These beautifully detailed antique French ironstone (faience) side plates feature delicately hand coloured designs of floral and foliate vignettes - a fabulous exemplar of French fascination with the Orient. A lovely piece of very romantic and intricate antique faience, the hand coloring work is absolutely exquisite displaying a technical mastery that attests to the skillful artisans at the faiencerie of Creil et Montereau, who won the Médaille d'or and other honors at the 19th century Paris exhibitions.

Marked on the base with the maker's mark for Creil et Montereau and the pattern name 'Japon'.

Plate 1 Very good antique condition -
In lovely condition for age, gorgeous on display and nothing to prevent continued use, as desired. No major damage to note but you may see small signs of use and wear such as minor crazing tiny 'fleabite' chips / glaze losses to the rim, scrapes, scratches and spots of discoloration and other small defects, all to be expected for an age over 100 years. A few smears to the deep blue coloring under the glaze, attesting to the more 'handmade' processes of the time.

Plate 2 Shabby condition -
With small wear and damage as noted above, but also with a 6cm hairline crack from rim towards the center of the plate. The crack is penetrating and discolored but there is no movement in it. This example is still lovely on display but may be past its best for serving. Please see photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions.

Plate dimensions 18cm diameter x 1.5cm high.

Stunning French antique design pieces from an iconic pattern to treasure! Please feel free to ask any questions :)
