A rare and gorgeous Aesthetic movement / Arts and Crafts French 'ravier' dish in blue transferware in the famous 'Indiana' pattern from Clairefontaine during the period of Emile Rigal and Jules Sanejouand (1860-1885). Classic French antique style in romantic florals accompanied by forward-looking geometric patterning that would become the basis of later Art Deco movement. Made in navy blue transferware on an ivory white ground.
The much-loved 'Indiana' pattern dates between 1879-1885 and was made in France by renowned faiencerie of Clairefontaine. The stunning floral design presents in navy blue with bold graphic elements in the repeating triangular border. Shading creates depth in the naturalistic floral pattern, with the deepest possible blue hues from the leaves, moving to the lightest washes of colour for the petals to create depth in this tone-on-tone design, an artistic technique known as 'camaieu bleu' in French.
From the earthenware factory of Clairefontaine (Burgundy Franche Comté) founded in 1804, this piece was manufactured between 1878-1885, after the first showing of this pattern during Universal Exhibition of 1878, and before the end of the period of dual control by Emile Rigale and Jules Sanejouand, which ended in 1885.
The Indiana table service saw the Clairefontaine pottery awarded a medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 for excellence in faience wares.
The design is intricate with dense coverage yet remains informal with lots of movement through the curving forms, demonstrating the early influence of the emerging style of Art Nouveau. Lovely shading in the leaves of the floral sprays which features beautifully rendered unfurling common garden flowers in France, along with ferns and thistles.
The piece is exquisitely detailed, not only in the main design, but also with the geometric border detail and an attractive diamond shape form to complete the fine workmanship of this piece.
Dimensions: 23.5cm x 13cm x 3.5cm high.
In excellent antique condition, with no chips or cracks. You may see small signs of use including scratches, tiny glaze losses and age-appropriate crazing of the glaze. Please see photos for condition. Presents extremely well and remains a lovely plate to use, display and enjoy in a vintage interior, or farmhouse kitchen décor. Bearing the lovely floral pattern mark for 'Indiana', along with the makers mark with anchor.
