A stunning large French antique saladier / deep dish with a charming scene of a sweet bird on a branch and accompanying florals in a lovely deep blue palette. Transfer printed in classic French antique style in blue transferware on a gently aged ivory ground, with a gorgeous rim pattern of foliage.
This lovely plate probably dates from around 1880-1900, made in France by renowned faience makers Hautin Boulenger & Cie, of Choisy-le-Roi, near Paris. The stunning (and super sweet!) vintage design presents in tones of dark blue with lovely depth created in tone-on-tone designs and wash effects within the glaze. Stamped with the HB & Cie makers mark which was in use between 1863-1920, before the merger with Creil and Montereau (after which time the company mark was HBCM).
The design is intricate yet remains open and airy, with a lovely rhythm and space between all the elements, and no center pattern. Lovely shading in the bird, flowers and branches, and in the two-tone navy and grey-blue stylised border design. The Oxford pattern from Choisy le Roi consisted of many divergent patterns within the same service, so this individual design will be very rare, each one beautiful in its own special way.
Showing few signs of its 120+ years of age, this piece is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or staining. A few very small signs of age and use, including light scratches, small scrapes to the inner and outer rims, tiny glaze losses, and a few tiny spots of patination. Consistent aged ivory color without patchiness, presents beautifully and suitable for food use with the glaze in wonderful condition.
