Brown transferware soup tureen with bird & blossom pattern, floral French ironstone from Choisy le Roi, c1890, excellent condition
A lovely brown transferware French ironstone soupiere / soup tureen from H Boulenger of Choisy le Roi, France. Antique French faience of the highest quality, with sculpted handles, glazed in white with brown transferware pattern of birds in flight and blossoming branches for a stunning cottage style decoration. This autumnal palette makes this piece perfect for Fall decor!
This large tureen, with its original lid, was made in French ironstone (earthenware) by the famous faienceries of Choisy-le-Roi in the late 19th century, probably for the Parisian market. In excellent condition, with only the slightest patina of age and use, this is a classic French country piece which shows few signs of its long life.
Elegant curving form with stunning intricate handles with subtle scroll details make this is a perfect French country décor piece. In wonderful condition for continued use at table, this fabulous piece would also be beautiful as a centerpiece, fruit bowl, flower vessel, large candy dish, as well as for serving.
The stunning design presents in earthy brown tones with sepia elements to create depth in tone-on-tone designs and wash effects within the glaze. The design (named 'Lyonnais') is intricate with a densely detailed garland covering the border yet remains open and airy, with a lovely rhythm and space between all the flying birds. Lovely shading in the birds' wings and flowers of the blossoming branches, and in the two-tone sepia and dark brown stylized border design. This design is rare and very beautiful - and even more rare to find in this gorgeous brown colorway.
Stamped on the base for Hippolyte Boulenger of Choisy le Roi, France with a mark in use from 1878.
Excellent vintage condition - few signs of use, no chips or cracks, light all over crazing, consistent ivory color. Some small glaze spots and smears present also as to be expected for manufacturing processes of the time - these are in no way faults, but arise from the more "hand made" processes in use at the time of manufacturing. In amazing condition for its age of 120+ years - in wonderful condition for display or use.
