A lovely French Antique 'talking plate' ('assiette parlante') from around 1884-1900 from the renowned faiencerie of Creil et Montereau, France. This piece has a sophisticated party theme featuring a pair of revelers at a masked ball in the black transferware central panel. A fabulous pieces of antique black transferware, great on display or suitable for use - or as a gift for a host or any party people in your life!
Lovely details in the border with musical instruments and other firvolities to discover, along with teh intricately rendered central panel. The text on the plate reads as follows:
"LE BAL MASQUE - No 6 - Les Pas du Canneton Sensible"
'No. 6' shows this plate would have been part of a series, this one of 12 pieces all depicting scenes from a Masked Ball (Bal Masque). The text translates roughly to "The dance of the Sensitive Duckling" (and, no, I have no real idea what it means! I would guess they are referencing a (possibly made up) dance of the time, but not sure if that's the case ;).
Diameter: 20cm
In excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks or significant scratches, light signs of use and some minor crazing, spots and smears of the transferware pattern, as usual for the more hand-made processes of the time. There is a small firing fault, resembling a small chip, to the underside of the rim. This happened in the factory as it has been overglazed and is not visible from the front. Please see photo for details.
In truly fabulous condition for age, and ready to be put on display or given as a special gift!
