Stunning and rare antique water pitcher (French 'broc') and matching large basin by renowned faience producers BFK (Boch Freres Keramis) of Belgium. In excellent condition. Beautiful decoration in red and white transferware in a beautiful Art Nouveau floral pattern. Originally a bathroom set ('necessaire de toilette') of a water jug and basin for washing, these pieces remain bear some signs of the passage of time but remain in very good condition overall and display beautifully.
Keep them together as a fabulous bathroom accessory in a luxurious antique or French-inspired decor scheme, or use them separately, the jug makes an excellent tall vase, while the bowl works beautifully as an over-sized bowl for fruit or other display objects - either will be gorgeous as a large centerpiece or decorative embellishment for your home.
Priced and sold as the SET of basin and the jug together. Also included as a bonus is a small soap dish cover in the same pattern. (The original base for the dish has sadly been lost to time, but I have also included an antique substitute dish to hold under the lid that looks very pretty. I am including this for free with the set.)
Dating from the very late 1800s / very early 1900s at the time of transition between the Aesthetic Movement and the emerging Art Nouveau. This style would have been the height of fashion during the Parisian Belle Epoque, with lovely sinuous Art Nouveau designs trailing over the surface, along with a delightful point-and-trefoil border pattern. The beautiful floral sprays of tiger lily flowers in a non-repeating pattern - every part of the design is different, making this set a tour-de-force of the highest quality transferware of the time. A grand, oversized form and a subtle sculpted elements complete the look - so much detail to enjoy in these pieces, even the jug handle is covered with pattern) while the crisp white ground really highlights the highly detailed transferware decoration.
CONDITION:
The pitcher is in excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks, minimal discoloration, very light age-appropriate crazing of the glaze. One small glaze loss on the body of the jug, probably a bubble or inclusion from the time of manufacture.
The bowl is in good condition - a tight hairline crack of approx 8cm runs vertically from the outer rim into the body of the bowl (there is no movement at this crack); along with a little staining to the rim.
Soap dish is the original lid only, handle has a small hairline, with a small dish to serve as the base from a different pattern - this is included free with the set.
Please see photos for condition. Overall, this jug and basin are exceptionally well preserved for an age of 120+ years, extremely rare to find.
Jug dimensions:
20cm (7.7") diameter at widest point of the belly of the jug
29.5cm (11.5") high (at highest point)
25cm (9.6") maximum depth (from back of handle to front of jug)
Basin dimensions:
37.5cm (14.5") diameter
12cm (4.5") high
(All dimensions are approximate)
Stamped pattern name 'Mars' and BFK (Boch Freres Keramis) as makers mark on the base.
A stunning floral design in romantic red transferware, this set would be beautiful for wedding photos, used for florals, a table centerpiece, or for any type of antique display. Add some delightful French florals and superb antique style to your home!
