A pair of elegant French antique compotiers or cake stands, in grey blue transferware in the sought-after 'Royat' pattern by Sarreguemines. Classic French vintage style in a gorgeous floral transfer print, with stylised floral sprays of Columbine flowers. This pattern is a lovely example of French transferware of the Art Nouveau period, made in high quality earthenware c1910-1920 by the renowned faienceries of U&C (Utzschnieder & Co) Sarreguemines, France
These lovely plates are classic pieces of French design, perfect French Country style. A stunning floral design in a soft grey blue. Impressed with production numbers on the base, along with the stamped pattern name 'Royat' as part of the maker's mark.
The design is intricate yet remains open and airy, with a fine border pattern and the naturalistic vining pattern of the flowers. The pattern is primarily a rendering of Columbine flowers, which to the Victorians were symbolic of romantic love, due to the revival of classical associations with Aphrodite, as well as being symbols of piety and the suffering of the Virgin Mary (from the Renaissance period). The design features lovely shading in the leaves of the flower petals, and slightly stylised stalks and leaves, typical of the sinuous forms of the Art Nouveau period.
Priced and sold as a SET of 2 of compotiers - one low footed plate + one tall desert stand.
Both pieces in excellent antique condition, with a lovely ivory ground colour, no cracks or chips, very little crazing. At an age of over 100 years, please expect to see the odd sign of age and use such as light scratches, small spots and areas of discoloration, minor crazing, tiny flea bit glaze losses, etc.
