A rare and lovely antique 19th C Aesthetic Movement dinner plate in teal blue transferware. Designed by the renowned ceramic artist Pierre Mallett in the sought after 'Canova' ornithological pattern and made at the potteries Brown, Westhead and Moore (Cauldon) of Staffordshire with a registry mark from 1868. A stunning piece of blue & white, sold in Paris in the 19th century at the famous Grand Depot of Emile Bourgouis.
Sized at 25cm this is a small serving platter or a large dinner plate (generously sized especially for the time), this piece features a very beautiful transfer printed ornithological motif of a bird perched in a bird cage. A fabulous piece of Staffordshire pottery, made for the French market with a subtly molded edge with raised border rim in the subtle scalloped (festonée) shape favored by the French.
Colour in very dark petrol or teal blue / black with lighter grey for a lovely tone-on-tone design. Bearing backstamps for both B.W.M & C (Brown, Westhead and Moore), and the Grand Depot Emile Bourgouis.
Condition is very good antique condition. No chips, no cracks. There is a small firing fissure with slight discolouration on the rim. Also a small firing bubble with discoloration on the rear, please see photos. Overall body is sound with light crazing, signs of wear and use including surface scratches from cutlery and a few scrapes The color of the white ground is good, with light overall patination and no patchy discoloration / staining.
Overall this plate displays very nicely with a surface glow that comes with the patina of aging, it remains a lovely object.
Dimensions: 26cm diameter 2cm high
A fabulous piece for discerning collectors.
