A very rare French antique majolica lidded jar, in a pineapple (possibly artichoke) form, in navy blue with sage green fluted twist design. Made by Gustave de Bruyn of Faiencerie de Fives Lille, c1890-1920.
Typical for the Fives majolica style, this piece exhibits lovely colour depth in the sage green glaze areas, from layers of glaze pooling in depressions to form deeper color while showing slightly lighter on the edges / corners. This is beautifully offset by the jewel-like depth of the contrasting blue panels, an intense navy that provides regal foil to the naturalistic green. The glaze retains signs of hand-brushed application, with deeper and lighter areas, and some inclusions under the surface.
Difficult to date exactly, but stylistically placed at the late 19th to early 20th century. This is a beautiful piece in truly fabulous condition for its age of 120+ years - it has clearly been kept for display (or very occasional use) and shows very little wear or damage. A few small signs of wear - small scratches here and there and a few tiny flea bite glaze losses from the underside of the lid, not visible on display. A few spots of very minor tea staining inside the belly of the bowl.
Base stamped with the mark for Gustave De Bruyn, Faiencerie de Fives, Lille and the form number 569.
Dimensions - 17cm high (including lid) x 14cm wide (approx. diameter at belly of the jar)
A very rare find for your majolica collection - or for your French vintage interior!
