A lovely hand painted Staffordshire heating plate, featuring a gorgeous spring time design of two birds in flight and bamboo leaves. With its charming hand applied polychrome glazes this lovely plate evokes the best of Japonisme of the 1920s Art Deco period.

This is known as an 'assiette chaffante' in French, intended to be filled with hot water to keep food hot, possibly intended to feed babies or very young children.

Marked for James Dixon & Sons Sheffield

The color is rendered by hand over a black transfer outline. Glaze pooling and washes adding to the depth and interest. A lovely example of intricate transferware augmented by skilled hand painting.

In very good antique condition - no chips or cracks, but signs of use in scratches, glaze scrapes, wear to the inner and outer rims. Gentle overall discoloration of the glaze, light all-over crazing - displays very well and remains suitable for use or display. Note that the cap of the spigot is set fast in place and cannot be unscrewed by hand, it might be possible using some tools and a bit of force! Perfect for the plate rack, or for your next tea party!

26.5cm diameter (29.5 including the water spigot) x 3.7cm high

A beautiful antique plate to display, use and enjoy!
