A lovely Japanese Kutani eggshell porcelain teacup and saucer set in the River's Edge pattern featuring Geisha figures and water scenes. Made in Japan for the export market during the Meiji Era c1900, this example sourced in France where the craze for 'Japonisme' was at its height in the late 19th century.
Green and blue river scenes outlined in black feature graceful Geisha dressed in mint and brick red Kimono, complemented by striking geometric decorative elements in a beautiful palette of burnt orange and deep midnight blue, with touches of sage green and an overlay of opulent gold decoration. This porcelain is light and delicate - so fine that light shines through - yet stronger than you'd expect. A luxury item that has lasted many decades.
Both pieces signed on the base in Japanese characters with the Kutani ('Nine Valleys') mark in gold on a red ground.
Dimensions -
Cap capacity - 200mls
Cup - 10cm diameter x 5.4cm high. Handle adds 2.5cm to width for a total width including handle of approx 12.5cm.
Saucer - 15cm diameter x 2.2cm high
This set is in very good antique condition. No chips or cracks, gilt remains in good condition. A little rough patch inside the cup rim, possibly from the time of manufacture, which can be felt but not seen. At an age of 120+ years, you will see light signs of use and wear including a small area of discoloration inside the cup, a few scratches, very light wear to the gold, etc. Nothing to detract from appearance on display and the cup is still usable, if desired. Hand wash only in warm water - do not use abrasive cleaners, microwaves or dishwashers on this delicate piece.
A set to treasure and enjoy - for Kutani collectors or tea lovers alike!
Feel free to ask any questions :)
