A gorgeously aged French antique faience soup tureen with a delightful Neoclassical design of ribbons and garlands in monochrome relief molded pattern. This lovely and rare soupiere / tureen features barbotine relief details in a timeless creamy earthenware. Made in 'terre de fer' ( French ironstone) by the faienceries of Badonviller, France c1923.
A perfect Parisian design, this lovely pattern features barbotine / sculpted designs worked in a tone-on-tone frieze in the ivory white paste, with garlands of bows and ribbons around the outer border. The back stamp was only used for a short period in 1923 before the merger of Badonviller and Luneville, so we can date this confidently at around 1923, just over a century ago.
SOUPIERE:
Bowl diameter: 26cm (at rim)
Height: 22 cm including lid (bowl only - 14cm)
(All dimensions are approximate to +/- 1cm)
CONDITION - In satisfactory / lightly shabby antique condition. No cracks. A large series of shallow chips to the foot rim of the soupiere, a few deep scrapes and scratches. As to be expected at an age of over 100 years, this piece has signs of age and use including some moderate scratches, very tiny areas of glaze loss, tea stain patination, and light crazing. Also small manufacturing faults including a glaze smears and small inclusions under the glaze, as to be expected with the looser manufacturing standards of the time. Some areas of tea stain patina especially inside the soupiere bowl for a pleasing patina of age. Please see photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions.
The soupiere still displays very well but is no longer recommend for wet food service - use for whole fruits, nuts in shells, etc, or with a liner for serving bread rolls or small cakes.
A lovely, romantic piece for lovers of Parisian, French country or farmhouse décor, and ideal for monochrome white china collections. A stunning feature piece to display and enjoy!
Feel free to ask any questions :)
