Antique Gien France Cake Stand, Blue White Transferware, Floral Bee Design

An elegant French antique navy blue transfer printed comport / cake stand / footed platter ('compotier' in French) in the 'Fleurs Varies' pattern by Gien. A delightful dessert serving dish, in classic French antique style with densely patterned florals in navy blue transferware on a creamy white ground, with a gorgeous floral transfer print that features ivy, bees and insects.

This much-loved pattern dates from around 1890, made in France by renowned faience makers Gien. The design is intricate yet remains informal with lots of movement through the vining forms, evoking a countryside idyll bursting with life - see the sweet bees and the fabulous beetle on the base!

In very good antique condition, presents beautifully, no major chips, just a single 'fleabite' on the rim and a single 1cm fine hairline crack to the rim. Otherwise, a few signs of use including scratches, and light crazing. Some blue spots and smears present also as to be expected for manufacturing processes of the time - these are in no way faults, but arise from the more "handmade" processes in use at the time of manufacturing. No discoloration of the glaze, minimal crazing. In a condition that shows something of its age of 130 years but remains suitable for display or use. The price reflects the condition, but please familiarize yourself with the photos to ensure you are comfortable with the small defects before buying.
