A beautiful French antique dinner service in a stunning and rare design with full place settings (dinner, soup and side plates) for up to 12 people, plus an extensive set of matching serving dishes. From Sarreguemines France in the pattern 'Tircis' a floral design with strong Art Nouveau elements. The use of "tircis" for a flower is archaic and poetic. It comes from classical pastoral poetry.
Tircis" is a traditional shepherd's name used in the idylls of ancient Rome and later and later in French pastoral poetry of the 16th-18th centuries. · The Flower: In this context, "tircis" was used as a poetic, vernacular name for a simple, wild meadow flower.
This service was made in French faience ('terre de fer') c1860-1890, remains in lovely antique condition, very usable and displays beautifully.
CONDITION - Overall, this set remains in excellent condition with a gentle patina of age, no chips or cracks. Very light crazing to some pieces, light scratches, a few very small areas of glaze loss, a few small areas of discoloration, etc. Also, it is manufactured using more 'handmade' processes than today, and you may see areas of glaze smudging, glaze spots, bubbles under the glaze as is normal for transferware and part of the vintage charm of the items. With the exception of a few minor flaws everything is in excellent condition and remarkably well preserved for its age of 120+ years - the service remains fully usable and will display beautifully for years to come.
