A French salt-glazed stoneware tobacco jar decorated in relief with standing figures and tobacco leaves, dating from around 1920. Tobacco jars of this type were produced to store loose tobacco and formed a familiar feature of French homes during the early twentieth century.
The warm salt-glazed finish highlights the moulded decoration, while the figural panels and tobacco leaf motifs give the jar strong visual character. Examples retaining crisp moulding and free from damage are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
