A rare early twentieth-century French domestic washing set in solid oak, comprising a traditional washboard, washing paddle, and kneeling stool. Sets of this kind were used before widespread mechanised laundry, allowing linens to be scrubbed by hand at low basins or outdoor wash stations. The survival of all three elements together gives this piece strong decorative and documentary interest.
The sculptural simplicity of the forms makes it especially attractive in a laundry room, bathroom, country kitchen, or as a rustic decorative grouping against a wall.
